Nonequilibrium work relation from Schrödinger’s unrecognized probability theory

چکیده

Jarzynski’s nonequilibriumwork relation can be understood as the realization of the (hidden) timegenerator reciprocal symmetry satisfied for the conditional probability function. To show this, we introduce the reciprocal process where the classical probability theory is expressedwith real wave functions, and derive amathematical relation using the symmetry. We further discuss that the descriptions by the standardMarkov process from an initial equilibrium state are indistinguishable from those by the reciprocal process. Then the Jarzynski relation is obtained from themathematical relation for theMarkov processes described by the Fokker–Planck, Kramers and relativistic Kramers equations.

Entropy production fluctuation theorem and the nonequilibrium work relation for free energy differences.

There are only a very few known relations in statistical dynamics that are valid for systems driven arbitrarily far-from-equilibrium. One of these is the fluctuation theorem, which places conditions on the entropy production probability distribution of nonequilibrium systems. Another recently discovered far from equilibrium expression relates nonequilibrium measurements of the work done on a sy...

The Thermodynamics of Small Driven Systems

In the present thesis, a thermodynamic theory is developed for driven soft matter systems like polymer solutions and colloidal suspensions. Within this theory, notions like the work applied to the system externally and the heat dissipated into a heat reservoir will be defined consistently. Going beyond mean values, all quantities are defined along a single trajectory. This thermodynamic approac...

An Optimal Transport View on Schrödinger’s Equation

We show that the Schrödinger equation is a lift of Newton’s third law of motion ∇μ̇ μ̇ = −∇WF (μ) on the space of probability measures, where derivatives are taken w.r.t. the Wasserstein Riemannian metric. Here the potential μ → F (μ) is the sum of the total classical potential energy 〈V, μ〉 of the extended system and its Fisher information ~2 8 ∫ |∇ ln μ|2dμ. The precise relation is established ...

Statistical mechanical theory for steady state systems. V. Nonequilibrium probability density.

The phase space probability density for steady heat flow is given. This generalizes the Boltzmann distribution to a nonequilibrium system. The expression includes the nonequilibrium partition function, which is a generating function for statistical averages and which can be related to a nonequilibrium free energy. The probability density is shown to give the Green-Kubo formula in the linear reg...

Clausius inequality and optimality of quasistatic transformations for nonequilibrium stationary states.

Nonequilibrium stationary states of thermodynamic systems dissipate a positive amount of energy per unit of time. If we consider transformations of such states that are realized by letting the driving depend on time, the amount of energy dissipated in an unbounded time window then becomes infinite. Following the general proposal by Oono and Paniconi and using results of the macroscopic fluctuat...
